The award is in the memory of Dr. Ram Prakash Bhatia, a Scientist who spent his entire career in the DRDO.
Dr. Ram Prakash Bhatia was born and raised in Lahore until the partition brought him to Delhi. Thereafter he pursued his post graduate studies at Delhi University. At the behest of Dr Daulat Singh Kothari, India’s Scientific Adviser to the Ministry of Defence and who was also his teacher, Dr. Ram Prakash Bhatia joined the Defence Science Laboratory at Metcalfe House in Delhi. In 1952 he was selected for a German Fellowship to pursue his PhD at Hamburg University. He returned to India in 1956.
In 1964 Dr Bhatia was sent to teach mathematics at the College of Military Engineering at Dapodi Pune, where he taught until 1967 returning back to the Defence Science Laboratory in Delhi. He retired finally from DRDO in 1986.
Dr Bhatia enjoyed inculcating the habit of mental maths in children by giving puzzles and mind games to children. He started a voluntary institution Vidya Tutorials to match bright tutors from financially weak sections with academically weak students from well to do families. He specifically encouraged girl students in the local schools by instituting academic excellence prizes for those from the weaker sections.
Our desire therefore is that the Dr Ram Prakash Bhatia memorial Award at the Department of Mathematics should be awarded to women students belonging to the economically weak sections who have excelled academically in the Department of Mathematics at the undergraduate level.
